17/05/10: New NGS qPCR library quant kit
May 17, 2010 by Peter · Leave a Comment
This is a brand new product from Agilent that looks great. Designed to complement SureSelect sequence capture technology, it can also be used by any researcher who is working with next generation sequencing. In short, it is a fast and sensitive way to quantitate the amount of DNA in the library. The kit contains a DNA standard to which the library samples are compared.
Since the Agilent website is still being updated, you can get early access to the protocol here (PDF file): NGS Library Quant Kit

Agilent is pleased to invite you to a FREE e-seminar on Brilliant III, The Next-Generation Real-Time PCR Reagents for Improved Detection and Quantification.
Thursday, May 06th, 2010, 4:30 PM CET (Paris time)
> Register to this e-seminar
During this e-seminar, you will learn how Brilliant III Ultra-Fast QPCR and QRT-PCR Master Mix reagents are designed to give you quicker access to your data without compromising data reproducibility and quality, by providing the fastest cycling times on any real-time PCR instrument. More specifically, we will discuss the following:
| • | Brilliant III unique features, e.g. a newly engineered Taq, delivering a faster extension rate combined with a novel hot-start technology to minimize non-specific amplification |
| • | Brilliant III Taq mutants resistance to common PCR inhibitors compared to the wild type |
| • | The validation of Brilliant III reagents across a wide range of real-time PCR systems and a variety of templates and targets |
| • | The earlier threshold cycle detection for a more reliable quantification |

01/03/10: release of Ultra-Fast qPCR Master Mixes
March 1, 2010 by Peter · Leave a Comment
Agilent’s Stratagene division has announced the launch of their 3rd generation, Brilliant III Ultra-Fast QPCR and QRT-PCR Master Mixes. These offer the same superior sensitivity for improved quantification and reproducibility as Stratagene’s Brilliant II reagents, with the added benefit of fast cycling times and reduced primer-dimer/non-specific product formation.
The Brilliant III Ultra-Fast qPCR and QRT-PCR Master Mix reagents are designed to provide the fastest cycling times on any real-time PCR instrument. These reagents feature a newly engineered Taq, delivering a faster extension rate, combined with a novel hot-start technology to minimize non-specific amplification. The ultra-fast reagents allow the completion of real-time experiments in less than 40 minutes, giving researchers quicker access to their data, without compromising data reproducibility and quality.
These new reagents have been developed and validated on the ABI StepOnePlus and BioRad CFX96 systems. In addition, Brilliant III is being tested on several other fast qPCR systems.
The kits provide researchers with the flexibility to perform a variety of applications, including gene expression analysis, pathogen detection and SNP genotyping. The reagents are validated across a range of fast, real-time PCR systems and across a range of templates and targets.

Videos explaining MIQE guidelines
November 11, 2009 by Peter · Leave a Comment
Browsing through You Tube just now, I found these videos illustrating the concepts of the MIQE (Minimum Information for Publication of Quantitative Real-Time PCR Experiments) guidelines. These focus on how to apply the guidelines to design a solid experimental approach for RT-qPCR. There are four videos in total. The sound is a bit “fuzzy,” but the content is a fairly nice overview of MIQE:
H1N1 RT-PCR Primer/Probe Sets
November 6, 2009 by Peter · Leave a Comment
In response to the outbreak of the 2009 H1N1 flu (swine flu), and as a service to the public health laboratory community, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an Emergency Use Authorization which includes an RT-qPCR Swine Flu Panel test. The CDC is authorized by the FDA to provide the diagnostic test and has made the sequences for the primer and probe sets available. IDT is now offering these sets for Research Use Only (RUO) purposes.
