SporeStick® is a robust, portable air sampler for collecting airborne spores and other particulates for subsequent analysis. Two adhesive-coated sampling sticks rotate at controlled speed to capture particles directly from the air.
Designed for field use, SporeStick features a weather-resistant enclosure, flexible pole mounting and wireless control of sampling speed, direction and timed sampling periods. Battery options are available for up to 3 or 7 days of operation.

Portable sampling of airborne spores and particulates
SporeStick® from OptiGene is a compact and portable air sampler designed for the collection of airborne spores and other particulate material for subsequent analysis.
The system uses a simple rotating-stick sampling principle. Two sampling sticks are mounted on a rapidly rotating bar and coated with a thin layer of grease or adhesive. As the sticks move through the air, airborne particles impacting their surface become trapped in the adhesive layer. At the end of the sampling period, the sticks can be removed and taken for downstream analysis.
This makes SporeStick particularly suitable where a straightforward and mobile method is required for collecting airborne biological or environmental particulates in the field.
Flexible field installation
SporeStick has an integrated adjustable clamp that allows the instrument to be attached to a pole or bar. The clamp can be rotated, enabling installation on vertical or horizontal supports as well as intermediate angles.
The instrument itself is housed in an IP67-rated polycarbonate enclosure, while the power connector is rated IP68, making the system well suited to outdoor sampling applications. The SporeStick device weighs only 430 g and measures approximately 130 × 100 × 150 mm.
Wireless programmable operation
Once switched on, SporeStick can be configured wirelessly using the freely available iOS or Android app.
Users can control:
- rotation speed
- direction of rotation
- alternating sampling and non-sampling periods
- separate day and night operating profiles
The day/night profiles can also be used to conserve battery power during longer field deployments.
The stainless-steel rotating bar has a maximum speed of 3,400 rpm, with the two sampling sticks positioned 87 mm apart.
Suitable for airborne spore and environmental particulate monitoring
SporeStick provides a practical sampling platform for studies involving airborne particulate matter, including applications where fungal spores, pollen or other biological particles are of interest.
Potential applications include:
- airborne spore sampling
- fungal pathogen monitoring
- agricultural and crop research
- aerobiology studies
- pollen and environmental particle monitoring
- field-based environmental research
- collection of samples for subsequent laboratory analysis
Airborne spore monitoring is widely used in agricultural research because many fungal plant pathogens disperse through the air, and spore sampling can contribute to surveillance and disease-warning strategies.
Power options for short- or extended sampling
SporeStick is available either as a standalone instrument or with battery systems designed for approximately 3-day or 7-day operation.
Available configurations include:
SPST-01-01 – SporeStick Option 1
SporeStick unit with power cable terminated in crocodile clips; battery not included.
SPST-01-02 – SporeStick Option 2
SporeStick plus 12 V, 12 Ah battery system for approximately 3-day operation.
SPST-01-03 – SporeStick Option 3
SporeStick plus 12 V, 24 Ah battery system for approximately 7-day operation.
A dedicated battery charger and free-standing mounting stand with carry bag are also available.
